Just in Time

A week before we arrived to Mawanaga, the clinic had opened its doors and people were flooding the entry way. It had been a long time coming as the beautiful building sat empty for two long years. We had prayed for the day when we would have nurses, medicines and supplies, and that day had arrived! The hope is now a reality.

Old men walked for miles to check on their aches and pains. Children stormed into the clinic with major gashes from their bike accidents on their way to fetch water. Mothers brought in their crying babies with possible Measles, Malaria, even HIV. I had never seen the village so busy.

Our last day was a Sunday and the team enjoyed the long and passionate church service. As people stood up to give prayer requests and praises, one local leader stood up and shared,

"I thank God today because early this morning my little daughter was bit by a large black snake (Black Mamba) and almost died. Her heart stopped. But because the clinic is close and had the anti-venom medicines, they were able to save her. Thanks be to God!"

Her heart had already stopped by the time she reached the clinic. Since the nurses live there, it is easy to find them and get immediate help. They gave her the medicine, got on their knees to the Lord- and her heart began to beat. This 4 year old's life has been saved.

If this isn't a testimony of the importance of this clinic, I don't know what is! We were all in shock and some of us in tears as we heard this story. Those of us who were there grasp the vision. Join with us to meet these immediate needs and keep this clinic functioning!

We have until the end of October!

As of now, the Mawanga clinic is funded only through October and their stock of medicine is running low. To fund 2 nurses averages out to $300.00 a month. (Not including medicine costs)

Q: What will it take?

A: Recruit a floor of nurses to sponsor the clinic. 10 nurses would only need to give around $40.00 a month each!
A: Find organizations who donate medicines to Uganda
A: Hold a fundraiser to make a large amount of $$ to keep it going through the end of the year.
A: Raise awareness of these needs by putting the story in newspapers, online medical journals, emails to friends and family, etc.

Clinic in Mawanga

The slide show is of several taken by our team July 2008. The clinic is currently staffed by 3 very capable nurses, but more help will be needed in the near future. The medical supplies were obtained from Project CURE and transported to the clinic by team members. There are some photos of the roof with a solar panel purchased through fund raising and artfully installed by Dave and a great team of workers. The clinic now has lights at night!
